Large Petrus Regout/Royal Sphinx Maastricht Timor platter, Netherlands; c. late 19th c.; 20”W. Petrus Regout (1801 - 1878) founded glassworks and potteries in Maastricht in 1834, becoming one of the most important Dutch industrialists. As best we can tell, the company began using this particular sphinx marking in 1879.

Nice wedding/anniversary gift: Vintage ceramic Indonesian marriage couple as interpreted by DG of Italy, c. 1960; referencing or depicting Java’s revered agrarian goddess Dewi Sri and her consort Sadono, known together as Loro Blonyo ( "two anointed as one”); conventional Loro Blonyo attire includes groom’s tubular sarong, bride’s bare shouldered kemben with traditional waist cloth; elaborate headdresses signifying royal or sacred status; 15"H x 12” W (NOTE: While the figures are sometimes identified as Rama and Sita, or as related to them, Loro Blonyo are discrete secular symbols of a happy marriage throughout Java and Bali where they are wood carved, not ceramic.)
