Very large and used in formal halls or throne rooms. One of a matching pair (lot M001B). This censer has a dragon motif and decorative elements found in the handles, design, and ornamental top, as well as inlaid gem stones. Both dragons and phoenixes are heavily associated with the imperial family, to the extent that the throne upon which the emperor sat was referred to as the dragon throne, and are also often depicted side by side in art, whether that be paintings or pottery, and even in how they relate to the imperial family. To be in the presence of these massive ceremonial censers, which are rarely seen by outsiders, was breathtaking and humbling. These are true treasures worthy of any museum or grand estate.
