Estate Sale Goddess is honored to host the "An American Love Story" estate liquidation, featuring the visionary Claude A Barnett and his lovely, Etta Moten Barnett. By now I'm hopeful you're traveling the path of discovery with me. This archive tells an incredible story. (Please feel free to reach out to tell me your love story of this family. 312.450.9821)They owned a mansion in one of THE most impressive neighborhoods in Chicago. HISTORIC BRONZEVILLE! And I while I don't want to bore you with the intriguing details, this family helped put Chicago on the map! Its well documented that there would be no EBONY, JET or TAN magazine without Claude A Barnett. Did you know this American Journalist FOUNDED the Associated Negro Press, AND MENTORED our dear, kind John Johnson and helped build the magazines that we all know and love. Back then the AP never wrote interesting, positive stories about Black people. Mr Barnett saw a need for it and founded the ANP. ( Speaking of John Johnson, how many of you know the sweet, funny story of me, Mr Johnson and his fed up limo driver, in the Jewel parking lot on Clark and Division? LOL) Not only did Claude A Barnett help Mr. Johnson, but he also mentored the brilliant 50 year editor of Ebony magazine, Mr. Lerone Bennett, Jr! There was nothing in this town that got past Claude A. Barnett. He (AND Etta Moten Barnett) dined with Kings, Queens, celebrities, Drs, Lawyers, Politicians, Presidents, right here in HISTORIC BRONZEVILLE. And lastly, the story goes as such: Claude A Barnett met Clarence Muse of Casablanca, Car Wash, Porgy & Bess. Mr. Claude introduced Ms. Etta to Mr. Clarence and Mr Clarence introduced Ms. Etta to Gerswhin. Claude A. Barnett was definitely the "plug" that invented the word SWAGGER!
His "cliff notes resume" reads as such: He was an American journalist the FOUNDED the Associated Negro Press, Graduate of Tuskegee Institute, decorated by President Wm Tubman of Liberia, also by Haitian President Paul Eugene Magloire, and promoted to Grand Commander by President Francois Duvalier.
Now can we talk a about the incomparable ETTA MOTEN BARNETT? Hollywood STAR, singer, performer during a time where the roles for Black folk were all washer women and butlers and such. Etta Moten Barnett is the woman that changed all that. There's a really informative video up on Estate Sale Goddess that speaks to many of the ills that she faced.
Do yourself a favor and come see this incredible archive in person!
This estate offers tons of NEVER SEEN BEFORE VINTAGE Ephemera, photos, drawings, manuscripts and such.
