Dr. J. William Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. Spectacles became a lifelong passion for Bill, as his friends knew him, largely influenced by his father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. A lifelong resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, Bill often frequented the well-known shop of respected antique dealer, Henry Stern, as he built his collection.
