But because of a lack of reliable local timber, they imported much of the wood needed for the railroad ties from British colonies elsewhere. ● By the 1990's, these railroad ties (British call them “Sleepers”) finally began being replaced by concrete sleepers. ● Local furniture artisans bought huge piles of these old sleepers as they were made from ancient tropical hardwoods - Teak from Burma being one of the most prized. The rustic furniture made from the railroads thus became locally known as Sleeper Wood Furniture. ● Having survived 150 years underground in Africa with borer-beetles gnawing at them and steam locomotives dropping coal on them, these pieces were custom-made for a South African immigrant to the US. None of this furniture has ever seen urethane, polish or stain on them. The wood oils protect it naturally, but an occasional wipe with mineral oil
