Woven grass base for structure, hats can be compressed and wrapped for storage. When opened, hat measures approx 32 inches in diameter by 6 inches in depth. When compressed, hat measures approx 18 inches diameter by 13.5 inches in depth. Property of a New York Private Collection. ‘The Juju Hat or as they are called in Cameroon the Bamileke or Tyn hats from the Bamileke tribes have come a long way from being traditional ceremonial headdress to adourning beautiful interior designer homes as contemporary wall hangings. For hundreds of years the Bamileke tribes have been creating these hats for their tribal chiefs, royal families and dignitaries.

Paulémile was very influenced by Cézanne. He remembered his father telling him and his brothers repeatedly that ‘If you want to paint, look at Cézanne’, and he knew Cézanne's work at first hand from the landscapes and still-life paintings that hung in the family dining-room at Eragny. It was during the late 1920's and early 1930's that Paulémile reached the peak of his artistic development, arriving at the individual style for which he is best known.
