Judge Austin Miller, the manor's original owner, was a prominent lawyer and banker. He came to be largely responsible for the decision to make Memphis part of Tennessee instead of Mississippi. Hardeman County ws only 21 years old when he purchased the land for the house in 1844. Miller not only drew the plans himself, but also supervised the construction of his "English country home".
