The original of The Singing Butler was painted in 1991, it was sold in 1998 for £32,000 and then in 2006 it generated frantic bidding at an auction at Hopetoun House, near Edinburgh, of major Scottish paintings, with telephone bids from around the world. It was purchased by a UK collector of Scottish art for £744,800. The amount paid for The Singing Butler broke the previous record price for a Scottish artist.
