Purpose and History
Long before modern heating systems, these portable boxes were essential for keeping warm in poorly heated environments. They were typically used in:
Horse-drawn carriages or sleighs during winter travel.
Unheated churches during long services.
Early trains and even military tents.
Design and Construction
The warmer is constructed from a wooden frame (often birch, walnut, or other hardwoods) that houses a perforated metal box, typically made of punched or pierced tin.
Heating Mechanism: A tray or "hopper" inside the metal box would be filled with hot coals or charcoal.
Ventilation: The decorative holes punched into the tin (often in patterns like hearts) allowed heat to escape while preventing direct contact with the hot embers.
Portability: A wire bail handle was standard for easy carrying.
