The credenza was likely manufactured The Berkey & Gay Furniture Company that was a premier, highly influential American furniture manufacturer based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, operating from 1866 until 1948. Renowned for its exceptional hand-craftsmanship and use of high-quality hardwoods like mahogany and walnut. The company was a dominant force in establishing Grand Rapids as the premier "Furniture City" of the US.
A wonderful historic piece, the top of this rare Jacobean antique credenza is constructed using wood planks. The piece features heavily carved paneling... apron fitted with three provincially constructed dovetail drawers with mushroom knobs centered inside square panels. Beneath the carved panels is a scalloped lower wood trim. Table stands on contoured turned spindle legs that finish in rounded feet.
Jacobean refers to the period from 1603 to 1625 coinciding with the reign of King James I of England (James VI of Scotland). The word derives from Jacobus, the Latin name for James. It describes the era's unique architecture and heavy oak distinctive furniture.
Any minor wear such as scuffs, slight color variations or scratches are consistent with age. Some inconsequential time related splitting along top wood plank surface as seen in photos.
