Vintage Japanese Kyokuhō 旭峰 Hotei Laughing Buddha – Takaoka Copperware – Signed – Wood Stand

Exceptional vintage Japanese Hotei figure, commonly known as the “Laughing Buddha,” attributed to noted Takaoka copperware maker Kyokuhō (旭峰).

Hotei is one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods and is traditionally depicted as a jovial, round-bellied figure representing happiness, contentment, abundance and good fortune. This finely modeled example features Hotei with his characteristic joyful expression and exposed belly, dressed in flowing robes with his staff held behind his back and sack incorporated into the composition.

The figure has a rich dark patinated finish and is displayed on a fitted dark wood presentation stand. Of particular importance, the reverse bears an impressed rectangular 旭峰 maker's seal. Research of comparable Japanese examples identifies this mark with Kyokuhō, an artist associated with the renowned Takaoka copperware tradition of Toyama, Japan. Takaoka has been an important Japanese metalworking center for more than 400 years.
