Lev-Landau mid-century oil on canvas cityscape painting in a cubist style. This artwork is signed by Lev Landau in the lower left corner. The composition has a landscape with stylized trees, a multi-colored building, and two figures in the foreground. It is housed in a wide, light-colored wooden frame with a rustic finish. The color palette includes shades of blue, green, ochre, and red.
Samuel David Lev-Landau (1895–1979) was a recognized award-winning Polish-American painter and Yiddish poet born in Warsaw, Poland, who emigrated to the United States. Associated with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) era, he worked primarily in oil and casein, painting modernist cityscapes, figural scenes, and landscapes...
He exhibited his art at ACA Galleries in New York, the 1951 Annual of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, at the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh (now the Carnegie Museum of Art), the 1951 Biennial at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC (which has since merged with the National Gallery of Art), and at the National Academy of Design between 1951 and 1956.
He was awarded the Albert Dorn Prize of the Audubon Society in 1965 and was on the Board of Directors for the Artists Equity Association of New York. Among the collections that currently house his work are the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
