This painting, oil on canvas, from the late 18th century, shows an older Caucasian male with curly gray hair, wearing a white sash tied in a bow, plus jacket. He is sitting in a mahogany open arm chair having straight horizontal back crest and straight arm, covered in brass-buttoned red leather or velvet. The painting is approximately 30"h x 25"w, of near photographic quality and detail, in a period molded goldtone gessoed wood frame typical of that time, 39"h x 34"w. There are two canvas patches in back. A paper tag on the back states "Colonel Sandarmae / Kern Church / Monmouthshire England". Unfortunately, we have not uncovered any biodata on such a person. Monmouthshire is located in southeast Wales. The painting is dirty but in good condition. The frame exhibits deterioration with gesso losses predominantly along the foredge band.
