Sold antique cutlass with engraved blade and scabbard
Sold by Items of Value, Inc
$480.00
This cutlass needs research. Its appeal derives equally from the blade and the scabbard. The cutlass has a handle of two wood panels of pistol grip shape, engraved cross-shape quillons ending in two knobs, curved blade with notably wider section beyond the halfway point, one side without ornamentation, the other significantly decorated with cross over crown, foliage, scalloping, Arabic (?) calligraphy in one ellipsoid cartouche, the date "1854" followed by "AXX" within a rectangular cartouche, more calligraphy, overall 31-1/2"l. The blade end is corroded, quite possibly to deterioration caused by accumulated blood. The curved scabbard is a silvertone metal, in two sections flanking a medial ovoid clad in dark brown leather. The upper portion includes a top slit running down to the ring to permit inserting the blade. The applied cross section between the two rings is reminiscent of the style of the cutlass quillons. The engraved flowers and foliage are large and detailed. Note the winged amphibian (salamander ?) on both sides near the tip. The metal portions are slightly dented. The leather is slashed and rumpled on one side and deteriorated on the other side, which includes an engraved serpentine crossband, overall 26-1/2"l.
