1903 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate Happy Expectation of the Children by Margrethe Hyldahl, 7", no certificate, in a B&G box not original to plate, indents/scratches on back.

During December evenings Danish children are making decorations for the Christmas tree. They shop for gifts and try to keep what they bought a secret until Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve is the big time for celebrating the holiday in Denmark. It is on this evening that the big Christmas dinner is eaten. Perhaps the 3 children shown on this plate are thinking of that dinner and the exciting things that follow the dinner.

The traditional Christmas dinner in Denmark always begins with rice porridge. The porridge is sprinkled with cinnamon and butter. Somewhere int eh porridge is an almond, and everyone must eat porridge until it is found. The person who finds the almond gets a special present. The main course includes roast goose stuffed with apples and prunes, small browned potatoes and red cabbage. For dessert is an apple cake with its layers of bread crumbs, apple sauce and jam and topped with whipped cream.
