1908 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate St. Petri Church of Copenhagen by Povl Jorgensen, 7", no certificate, in B&G box not original to plate, indents on back.

St. Petri Church is considered by man y to be the most beautiful old building in Copenhagen. It is one of the oldest churches in the city, with records dating to 1304. It was devastated by fire in 1386 and again in 1728. Damage was once again inflicted in 1807 by Nelson's bombardment. Each time the building was restored.

From 1450 until the Reformation, St Petri (St. Peter's) was a parish church. Then for several years it was used as a cannon and bell foundry. In 1574 it was adopted by the Germans living in the city and since that time has been known as the German church of Copenhagen. In its present form the church dates to 1816.

The attractive copper steeple shown on this plate was erected during 1756-1757. Inside the church are 2 silver candelabra given by Queen Sofie Magdalene in 1731.
