Ended 1910 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate

1910 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate The Old Organist by C. Ersgaard, 7", no box or certificate, indent/scratch on back.

The organ shown on this plate is in a medieval church. The dress of the organist is also indicative of the Middle Ages. Hero of Alexandria described an organ in his "Pneumatica" about 100 B.C. dating them before Christ. Organs were installed in Denmark during the period of Catholicism. Even today the art of organ building is at a high level in Denmark. In 1961 the organ of Sweden's Kristianstad was rebuilt by a Danish organ builder in its original style. The design of the Grundtvig Church in northwestern Copenhagen was inspired by the symmetry of a church organ and the simplicity of the Danish village churches. It is considered one of the world's masterpieces of contemporary religious architecture.
