Ended 1913 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate

1913 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate Bringing Home the Yule Tree by Th. Larsen, 7", no box or certificate, inscribed on back of plate with an 3/E.

Conifers such as Norway Spruce, Scotch pine, larch and silver fir were first cultivated in Denmark in the late 18 C. The custom of using a tree as a symbol of Christmas was first introduced to the Danish in the early part of the 19th C. Outside the larger cities it is still common for a man to cut down a tree from his own forest, as is depicted in this plate. The whole family participates in the selection of the tree, after which it is cut down and then dragged, carried or pulled home on a sled.

Not only is there a tree in every home, but in most hospitals, hotels, restaurants, and stores in Denmark. Whenever Danish ships start on a voyage that will keep the sailors away from home at Christmas time, a small tree is usually taken aboard and placed at the top of the mast.
