Ended 1916 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate

1916 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate Christmas Prayer of the Sparrows by J. Bloch Jorgensen, 7", no certificate, B&G box not original to the plate, inscribed with 2 lines and a glaze circle on the back.

On the eastern coast of Zealand are the chalk cliffs called Stevens Klint. While these are striking cliffs they are only about 1/3 as high as those on the island of Mon. The Hojerup Church, shown on this plate, was built near the edge of Stevens Klint during hte latter part of the 13th C. Legend says that the church found its foundation being undermined by the sea, and so moved itself a handbreadth inland every Christmas. This retreat must have been too cautious because the cemetery, and finally in 1928 part of the church, toppled into the sea. In recent years the church has been restored and the cliffs below reinforced with masonry to prevent future damage.
