Near the hart of Copenhagen is an island called Slotsholmen (Castle Island) formed by canals on all sides. This picturesque island is where fishmongers, members of parliament, stockbrokers, flower merchants and Supreme Court judges conduct their business. here is Christiansborg Castle which now houses the Danish Folketing (Parliament) and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The castle is the 6th structure to be built on the site. The first was the castle fortress built by Bishop Absalon in 1167, the ruins of which can still be seen under the present building. From 1441 until the disastrous fire of 1794 the Christianborg was used as a royal residence.

Pictured on this plate i the Royal Chapel, connected with the Christianborg Castle by the Cavelier's Passage. This is still the church of the Danish Navy and the Royal Family. Entombed in the church are 2 of Denmark's greatest naval heroes, Tordenskjold who defeated Charles XII of Sweden during the Great Northern War and Niels Juel who was victorious over the Swedish fleet at Koge in 1677. The chapel is one of the masterpieces of the famous Danish architect C. F. Hansen who also designed the Supreme Court of Justice (Hojesteret).
