Fused Glass Art Plate. Fertility concept plate for southwest Sushi line of limited hot glass plates. Signed Penje 89
Art and Mad Science: In the early days of glass fusing and slumping using different colors of glass with different mineral contents often resulted in the art piece cracking or even exploding in the kiln.
A special challenge was rendering dichroic (metal deposited) glass compatible with colored glass with the colorant minerals. This concept piece was the result of months of testing and compiling data on the annealing properties of glass from a variety of producers.
Each color of glass was cross tested and this concept plate was the final grand experiment in creating a stable piece of glass art that would survive the kiln.
Creating pieces with compatible coefficient of expansion and annealing so they would not explode in the kiln and most importantly survive as art pieces for at least several hundred years was the artist’s goal. The artist, Penelope Zeller, succeeded. Her glass art was carried and sold in galleries throughout the Rocky Mountain region.
