The EllisCo company (George D Ellis & Sons) is known for can manufacture. Evidently they made some stainless steel cans for use in labs.
This particular item was used in labs to sterilize glassware with steam, thus creating the great patina that formed over the years.
New stainless cans like this cost about $70 each.
At 2.5" diameter & 16.25" long, it would be great to keep documents safe.
