Interesting BACK *HISTORY if you have nothing better to do than read this?
Grandparents took me, my Mother and uncle on a road trip in 1957 Driving from Atlanta, GA, To Disneyland, CA. Along the way they discovered continuing financial difficulties at the park, that to help it stay afloat financially, Disneyland was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays during the winter months. Because of continuing negative publicity, Grandparents were afraid that it might be closing permanently and were not willing to continue the trip, since Disneyland had many challenges in the 1st years.

So plans changed.

We diverted to New Orleans French Quarter. Hawkers on Bourbon Street were offering astoundingly low priced trips to Cuba for $50 round trip per person. It was not like now. No constant news coverage. Everyone knew the Rebel Castro was in the mountains, but with president Batista having been in control for so long and our President saying all was safe, the casinos were raking in millions, They thought it safe to travel.

It actually was. We went to the Copa Cabana for the floor show, visited Banana plantations, brought a small banana plant back with us, and visited many historical sites. As we heard what the tour guide referred to as “fireworks celebrations in the hills: we were blissfully ignorant.

Grandmother was an avid art collector and entranced with hand carved framed Folk Art. These were bought there.

After Batista's overthrow in 1959, Castro assumed military and political power as Cuba's prime minister. Our family bought the “Agrarian reform” idea and I retuned with a youth ministry for the poor the same year. Go figure.
