In 1971, the congregation of Aldersgate Methodist Church in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, commissioned Eugene Marggraff, a glass artist who studied stained glass design at the Institute of Art in Vienna, Austria, and whose work also exists in a building on the National Register of Historic Places, to design a series of Dalle de Verre windows for their sanctuary. French for “slab glass,” Dalle de Verre was invented in Europe after World War II and was part of the midcentury modern design movement.
The stained glass panels are from the nave of the church. In the Artist's Statement, Marggraff described the nave windows as "purity of its appearance, divested and stripped, made bare of all matter of an almost mathematical or angelic purity or let us simply say, color in motion..."
In partnership with the Aldersgate trustees, JDT Stained Glass (which specializes in extracting church windows) retrieved this Dalle de Verre panel prior to the building being razed to make room for critical workforce housing in the community. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to Simpson Housing Services and Bridging, two charitable organizations committed to helping those in need of shelter.
The church was designed by the architecture firm of McEnary and Krafft and construction was completed at the St. Louis Park, MN site in 1950. Dale McEnary and Edwin Krafft were both Minneapolis natives and studied architecture at the University of Minnesota. McEnary also attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Krafft attended Dartmouth College. They are best known for designing the Farmers and Mechanics Savings Bank, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses the Westin Hotel and a popular restaurant named Bank in downtown Minneapolis.
