Set of four mahogany shield back slip seat side chairs. The pierced back splats are carved with exceptionally
fine detail in a motif of rice sheaf and water leaf, bell flower, and reel & bead. The front legs are square and
tapered with carved face molding and joined with an H stretcher. The rear seat rail and seat upholstery frames
are Baltic birch with signs of past European wood worm infestation. The surfaces have been cleaned and repolished with shellac, and the slip seats have been upholstered with horse hair fill and covered in a silk satin
fabric. Continental, possibly Denmark, circa 1780-90.
