Rare 1895 Bing & Grondahl Christmas Plate

Rare 1895 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate Behind the Frozen Window, 6 3/4", contains indents/scratch on back of plate and a rough section on the rim likely from a plate stand (barely noticeable). There is no box or certificate.

Through the frosted windowpane of the Frederiksberg Castle on Frederiksberg Hill the skyline of Copenhagen is seen on a cold, clear night. Frederik IV built the castle in 1704 as a summer residence.

Along the skyline may be recognized, among other buildings, the contours of such famous structures as the Marble Church, the Round Tower with the Trinitatis Church, the St. Nicolai Church tower, the Royal Stock Exchange and the Church of Our Lady. While Copenhagen was still a small fishing village Absalon built a fortified castle with three towers to defend it. That is the reason why Copenhagen chose the 3 towers for its coat of arms, and also why Bing & Grondahl selected the same 3 towers for its trademark.

Not realizing how much the world would cherish these Christmas plates, Bing & Grondahl conservatively made only 400. Today this plate is sought after by collectors and commands consistent pricing year-over-year. At the time of listing, we could only find 2 for sale.
