Antique rush light - made of wrought iron with oak pole & wooden base. Note worm holes in base!
Rush lights were an early form of affordable indoor lighting (see below for more info)
This was purchased from an antique dealer in England in the 1980s. Could be as old as 18th century.
28” tall overall. Cast iron part is 7.25” tall, pole is 18" long. Wooden base is 7.5” x 7.5” x 2” high.
A rushlight is a type of candle or miniature torch formed by soaking the dried pith of the rush plant in fat or grease.
For several centuries rushlights were a common source of artificial light for poor people throughout the British Isles.
The nippers at the top held the lit piece of rush.
